12 of these 61 names have a person record behind them and link to one. The other 49 are set from the identifier in the cast list, which is a slug of the name — so hyphens and full stops are lost and a few come out wrong. We hold nothing else about them. Nobody here is matched to a character: the cast list records who was in the company and not what they played.

The original plot involved a shipwreck, but the SS Morro Castle disaster happened just before opening, so the book was hastily rewritten in two weeks.

  • It may have been created out of tragedy, but Anything Goes (the title was chosen to indicate the desperation with which the show was put together) turned out to be the fourth longest running musical of the Thirties as well as one of the decade’s most durable attractions. • Though still taking place on shipboard, the new story eliminated the bomb scare but retained the leading characters of the original plot: nightclub singer Reno Sweeney (Merman), her chum Billy Crocker (Gaxton) who stows away to be near Hope Harcourt (Bettina Hall), the debutante he loves, and Moon-Face Mooney (Moore).
