6 of these 93 names have a person record behind them and link to one. The other 87 are set from the identifier in the cast list, which is a slug of the name — so hyphens and full stops are lost and a few come out wrong. We hold nothing else about them. Nobody here is matched to a character: the cast list records who was in the company and not what they played.

A producer is one string on this record, however many people or companies it names. Directors and choreographers are held both as text and as identifiers; where an identifier exists the name links to a page.

Around this production

The Hot Mikado may refer to: The Hot Mikado (1939 production) Hot Mikado, a 1986 musical

  • Both The Swing Mikado and Hot Mikado played simultaneously across the street from one another, leading to a new number in Pins and Needles called “The Red Mikado” which looked at this phenomenon. The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals Dietz Dan Rowman Littlefield Publis, p. 493
  • "For the 1936–1937 Broadway season, the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company presented ten of them within a two-month period. A few weeks after Knights of Song closed, the D’Oyly Carte offered eight revivals and later in the season Broadway offered two black versions of The Mikado, The Swing Mikado and Hot Mikado." The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals Dietz Dan Rowman Littlefield Publis, p. 531
  • The first was The Swing Mikado, and it was soon followed by Hot Mikado. The former had first been produced by the Federal Theatre Project for Illinois in September 1938 at the Great Northern Theatre in Chicago, where it ran almost six months (Time reported it played to 250,000 patrons and cleared a profit of $35,000). The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals Dietz Dan Rowman Littlefield Publis, p. 570
  • Todd mounted Hot Mikado, which opened three weeks after the FTP production of The Swing Mikado began New York performances. The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals Dietz Dan Rowman Littlefield Publis, p. 571
  • Robinson later starred in Hot Mikado. The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals Dietz Dan Rowman Littlefield Publis, p. 321

What this page does not know

  • No photograph of this staging. 48 of 13,459 productions hold one.
  • No character names. We can say who was in the company and not who they played.
