Of the 426 productions we hold that opened in the 2010s and record a performance count, this is the 77th longest. That is a rank within what we hold, not within everything that was staged.

Josh Lamon
Michael Potts
Mary Antonini
Josh Franklin
Vasthy Mompoint
Teddy Toye
Michael Genet
Brittany Conigatti
Nick Eibler

7 of these 16 names have a person record behind them and link to one. The other 9 are set from the identifier in the cast list, which is a slug of the name — so hyphens and full stops are lost and a few come out wrong. We hold nothing else about them. Nobody here is matched to a character: the cast list records who was in the company and not what they played.

Only 512 of 13,459 productions carry role names, and these came out of a wiki table — the names arrived with the table's own cell markup on them and have been stripped back. They are not linked to person records because the identifiers in that table do not resolve to ours.

A producer is one string on this record, however many people or companies it names. Directors and choreographers are held both as text and as identifiers; where an identifier exists the name links to a page.

Around this production

The Prom is a musical with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin, based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. The musical follows four Broadway actors lamenting their days of fame, as they travel to the conservative town of Edgewater, Indiana, to help a lesbian student banned from bringing her girlfriend to high school prom. The musical had a tryout at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2016 and premiered on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre in October 2018. A film adaptation, starring Meryl Streep and James Corden, and produced/directed by Ryan Murphy, was released on Netflix on December 11, 2020.

  • Broadway musicals self-referentially reclaimed stereotypes about gay men and musicals in Mean Girls and The Prom (2018). There are more musicals that practice this brand of self-reflexivity than those that grapple with the AIDS crisis, and this speaks to how musicals and US culture more broadly viewed gay men: as camp… Broadway Bodies Ryan Donovan 2023, p. 164
  • Lesbians received comic but stereotypical depictions in musicals like Nick & Nora (1991) and Legally Blonde (2007). While lesbian representation has demonstrably increased, only a handful of musicals with lesbian protagonists remain, and they are all variations on coming out: The Color Purple, Fun Home (2015), It Shou… Broadway Bodies Ryan Donovan 2023, p. 165
  • An example that may be worth keeping an eye on is The Prom, a tale about a lesbian high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the school prom in a small town. The Musical A Concise History Second Edition Ga Nzl Kurt Findlay Jamie 2 2022010, p. 486
