On a midsummer weekend in turn-of-the-century Sweden, the middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman, his virginal young wife, his brooding son, and his former mistress — the glamorous actress Desirée Armfeldt — become entangled in a comedy of romantic errors. As couples pair off and re-pair at Desirée's mother's country estate, the night smiles on lovers three times: for the young, the foolish, and the old.
