In the small Russian village of Anatevka in 1905, the poor dairyman Tevye struggles to maintain his Jewish traditions as the modern world encroaches on his family. One by one, his five daughters challenge tradition by choosing increasingly unconventional marriages, while the Tsar's edict threatens to force the entire Jewish community from their homes.
