Fanny Brice, an awkward but enormously talented girl from the Lower East Side, rises from amateur nights to become the greatest comedienne in the Ziegfeld Follies. Her spectacular career is shadowed by her tumultuous marriage to charming but reckless gambler Nick Arnstein, whose criminal dealings and wounded pride ultimately destroy their relationship.
