Told in reverse chronological order from 1976 to 1957, the story traces the dissolution of a friendship between three idealistic artists: composer Franklin Shepard, lyricist-playwright Charley Kringas, and writer Mary Flynn. Moving backward through time, each scene reveals how ambition, success, and compromise gradually eroded the passionate bonds that once united them.
