In the French Antilles, peasant girl Ti Moune rescues the wealthy mulatto Daniel after a car accident and falls deeply in love with him. Making a bargain with the gods -- her life for his -- she follows Daniel to his world of privilege, only to be rejected when he marries within his own class. The gods transform Ti Moune into a tree, and her love becomes a bridge between the island's divided peoples.
