Young Prince Pippin, son of King Charlemagne, searches for meaning and fulfillment in his life, trying war, revolution, the flesh, and art, all guided by a mysterious Leading Player and a troupe of circus performers. When he finds simple domestic happiness with a widow named Catherine, the Players try to lure him back to their grand finale -- a spectacular act of self-immolation.
