"The whole thing is quite obviously headed for enormous success," wrote Noel Coward in his diary during rehearsals for Sail Away (Broadhurst; Oct. 3, '61; 167). Coward first conceived Sail Away as an expansion of his song "The Bar in the Piccola Marina"; it was to be about a wealthy, newly widowed Englishwoman who visits Capri with her children and is swept up in the bohemian atmosphere.
