On a South Pacific island during World War II, Navy nurse Nellie Forbush falls for French plantation owner Emile de Becque, but struggles with her own prejudice when she learns he has mixed-race children from a previous marriage. Meanwhile, young Lieutenant Cable falls for a beautiful Polynesian girl but cannot overcome his own deeply ingrained racism, and both romances test whether love can conquer bigotry.
