In a rapidly changing New York City neighborhood, Tony, a former member of the Jets gang, falls in love with Maria, whose brother Bernardo leads the rival Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang. Their forbidden love mirrors Romeo and Juliet as racial tensions and gang warfare escalate toward inevitable tragedy.
