Of the 426 productions we hold that opened in the 2010s and record a performance count, this is the 81st longest. That is a rank within what we hold, not within everything that was staged.

Who was in it17 named

Reg Rogers
Britney Coleman
John Arthur Greene
Harris Milgrim
Nick Spangler
Anthony Wayne

11 of these 17 names have a person record behind them and link to one. The other 6 are set from the identifier in the cast list, which is a slug of the name — so hyphens and full stops are lost and a few come out wrong. We hold nothing else about them. Nobody here is matched to a character: the cast list records who was in the company and not what they played.

Only 512 of 13,459 productions carry role names, and these came out of a wiki table — the names arrived with the table's own cell markup on them and have been stripped back. They are not linked to person records because the identifiers in that table do not resolve to ours.

A producer is one string on this record, however many people or companies it names. Directors and choreographers are held both as text and as identifiers; where an identifier exists the name links to a page.

Around this production

Tootsie is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Robert Horn. The musical is based on the 1982 American comedy film of the same name written by Larry Gelbart and Barry Levinson. The musical made its world premiere try-out at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago in September 2018. Like the film, the musical tells the story of a talented but volatile actor whose reputation for being difficult forces him to adopt a new identity as a woman in order to land a job. The original movie revolved around a daytime soap opera, while the show involves a Broadway musical.

  • Gelbart kept America laughing for the better part of a half-century with television scripts—most famously for the first four seasons of M*A*S*H (1972–1976)—and movies including Oh, God! (1977, featuring George Burns) and Tootsie (1982, starring Dustin Hoffman). The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia Rick Pender Rowman Littlefield Publishing Lanh, p. 296
  • Musicals like Tootsie and Mrs. Doubtfire (2021) have been received as trans-phobic by some. Broadway Bodies Ryan Donovan 2023, p. 188
